Kazimir Malevich – Black Square (1915)"The ultimate, most extreme and simplest work of abstract art painted in the early 20th century is a black square. Just that. His black square has the terse authority of some unnameable revelation."

Malevich was turning away from the influence of Eastern art and looking towards the West.He called his new art Supremitism. The Black Square represented his idea of the Icon which was placed high up in most homes ,and placed it thus.
